Kompakt Total 6

The Kompakt Total 6 compilation is—to be perfectly frank—quite possibly the best introduction to (minimal) electronic dance music one could ever find. Not only does Total 6 manage to deconstruct supposedly disparate styles and traditions (e.g. minimal vs. techno vs. house vs. electro vs. IDM), it also finds itself filled to the brim with a wall of sound occupying every possible (melodic) frequency while being simultaneously static and constantly in flux. Think My Bloody Valentine, minus (some of) the noise and the “vocals” + some amazing “beats” and a whole additional assemblage of influences. Total 6 manages to collect some of the best singles Kompakt has ever released (the album’s opening track “Hicc Up,” Rex the Dog’s maximalist classic “I Look Into Mid Air, the after-hours anthem “The Difference It Makes,” Superpitcher’s retro/electro mood-swinger “Tell Me About It,” and Grummich’s “Frozen World” [which sounds exactly like what the title would suggest]) while also showcasing the immense level of groundbreaking experimentation and diversity this label has brought to the contemporary electronic music scene. Music that brings up the question endlessly asked of Radiohead (“what exactly is that sound and where the fuck does it come from?”), that uniquely fuses complex electronic melodies with intricate rhythms, and that calls into question whatever one previously thought electronic dance music was.
