ASG - Win Us Over

ASG - Win Us Over
(Volcom, 2007)

A lot of people hear the word "metal" and immediately head for the opposite side of the room. Don't. While ASG most certainly operate within the traditional, loosely-defined tropes of "metal" (heavily distorted guitars, wailing vocals, and general loudness), their music is so well-crafted, melodic, and accessible that, if the radio had any sense of decency, ASG would be making the rounds on the FM airwaves. They're a band to show your metal-hating friends that it isn't all blast-beats, corpse paint, deathly growls, and extremely technical 500 mph guitar solos (not that there's anything wrong with that). Those of you who identify with terms such as "kvlt" or "tr00" (and let's hope that you don't) will most likely not find this album to be adequate metal in any sense of the term. But that's when you come to realize: what if you stop thinking about ASG in terms of its "tr00"- or metal-ness? Then what do you have?

A really fucking great rock album.
